WeaverRidge Golf Club

WeaverRidge Golf ClubOur playing editors recently made the trip over to Peoria, Illinois to play WeaverRidge Golf Club. WeaverRidge opened in 1997, and in 1998 Golf Digest named it the 2nd Best New Course in the Country, and in 2003 Golf Week ranked it the #3 Best Course in Illinois. Golf Architects Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed this public course, and couldn't have done a better job.

This public course features a spacious clubhouse and banquet facility which you would normally see in a private club. But more importantly a unique golfing experience for the Midwest. There are 5 sets of tee boxes for all different levels of golfer. The longest set measuring at 7,030 yards. We of course played the second longest set, because we are no professionals.

From the first tee we could tell this course was special. It was a nice sunny day, with some wind, but a great day to golf. The first hole gave us a clue that sand traps and water hazards were strategically placed throughout the course. One of our playing editors didn't learn this very quickly, and he got plenty of practice out of the sand. But practice makes perfect! After finishing the front 9, we commented to ourselves about the quality job the superintendent has done keeping this course in top shape. When we approached #10 we began to see a shift in scenery.

Our wide-open prairie style course was all of a sudden surrounded by a lush forest. But the biggest difference we saw between the front 9 and back 9 was the elevation changes within the holes. For example #12, a par 3, sits 120 feet above a green that sits 220 yards away. The hole was very unique, and one of our playing editors had never seen anything like it. But the grand daddy of them all had to have been the par 5 #18. You must first tee off 80 feet above the fairway, and then if you avoid strategically placed bunkers and Big Hollow Creek, you have to attack a well guarded green with bunkers surrounding it. There is also a beautiful view of the clubhouse on left at the top of the hill. This is a great place to enjoy a nice beverage after your round, and you can watch others try and master the beautiful 18th.

The wood used in the clubhouse and bar, is all wood used from when trees were being cleared out for construction of the course. It is a nice touch and gives a good story to along with the clubhouse. The staff was very well trained and polite. The GPS in the carts was also very helpful in our round, but we would suggest utilizing the "pro tips" during your round. Every little bit helped us outAs we said, this course is an experience that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy. You might even want to bring a camera to remember the scenic holes that WeaverRidge has to offer. The staff is extremely courteous and the restaurant and catering is top notch. There were over 2,000 people that enjoyed Mother's Day brunch, and that just goes to how you how upscale this public course really is.
